FINISH WELL
Self reflection can be a good exercise, and needs to be conducted in a healthy way. The purpose needs to be determined in advance. If not, it is easy to get off track and go down paths not beneficial to us. Recent events, including the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others two weeks ago, prompted me to self reflect in a number of areas. One of those is to think of life as a relay race, and how I want to compete and finish my race. In the process I have looked at portions of Scripture which speak to running our race and finishing well. Hebrews 12:1&2, I Corinthians 9:24, Philippians 2:16, 2 Timothy 4:7 and Galatians 5:7 are portions which relate. If you take time to read these verses I believe you will gain perspective into God’s desire for us for living our lives. I found watching and listening to accounts of Kobe’s life insightful and interesting. His work ethic from an early age, the success he achieved in basketball, his attention to his wife and children, are examples of qualities expressed by many. It is evident he is held in high regard and admired. He did not let missteps in his life define him or take him down a path of destruction. He worked to benefit others and help them succeed. It seems Kobe lived his life this way on and off the basketball court. How we compete or live our life is important to each person individually and to the team we are part of. I have always had a desire to do the best I could in whatever I undertook, to be the best I could be. As I get older finishing my race strong and well seems to be a bit more important. I consider my family a team I am part of, and the one ranking highest in importance. I take seriously my responsibility before God for my family. Because I am a Christ follower, I am a member of the team known as The Body of Christ. In my analogy, life is made up of many races. Some we participate in as an individual and some we are part of a team. There is opportunity for each of us to finish strong and finish well. Many aspects and considerations contribute to running a successful race and to living a productive, well balanced life. It is the responsibility of each person to determine how we run the race, how we live our life. Failures of the past, or races we lost or did not finish, must not be what defines our life. God’s love is unquestionable! His hand is outstretched to each of us. His Mercy is new each morning! Each day offers a new beginning, and an opportunity to finish well!
